Mecklenburg Youth Lacrosse (MYL)
3/4th & 5/6th grade Game Rules

MYL adheres to the NCAA collegiate rules for lacrosse with the following modifications:

Length of the Game: Games will consist of two twenty-four (24) minute running halves. Clock will stop in the last two minutes of the second half and only if the score is within 4 goals. The clock will stop if there is an injury. Five (5) minute half time.

Overtime: Any game which the score is tied at the end of regulation time shall be followed by one (1) four (4) minute sudden-death overtime period. The clock will stop the last two minutes of the overtime period. If the score is tied at the end of the 4 minute overtime, the game will end in a tie score.

Time Outs: Each team has one time out that may only be used in the last two minutes of the second half and only if the score is within 2 goals.  If the score is 3-0 NO timeouts can be called. Each team will also be awarded one time out in the overtime period, which may only be used in the last two minutes of the OT period. Un-used timeouts may not be carried into the OT period. Official time outs (clock stops) may be called in the event of an equipment problem, injury or an emergency.

Substitutions: Each team will employ a rotating position format. Nine field players will start the game (3 attack, 3 midfielder's, & 3 defensemen). Every 4 minutes the timekeeper will blow the substitution horn. Time keepers will be instructed not blow the horn if you are advancing the ball toward the goal from inside your attack area and will not blow the horn during an apparent fast-break. On the substitution horn ALL 9 field players will come off the field and be replaced with 9 new players. All players on a team must play each of the three field positions during a game and they MUST play all field positions an equal amount of time.

Practice Attendance Effect on Game Playing Time: MYL employs an “everyone plays” policy. However, attendance will be taken at skill days and team practices and could have an influence on playing time. Missing an occasional practice or game for school work, illness or family matter is perfectly acceptable, given notification to your head coach. However missing practice on a regular basis will influence playing time. This is only fair to the players who come to practice, are trying hard to learn and improve and also are making a commitment to the team and their teammates.

Goaltenders: Teams must use a player from your roster in the goal.

Face-Off players: a player may not face-off more than two consecutive times.

Mercy Rule: 1. A team that is behind by four (4) or more goals shall be awarded a free-clear at the mid-field line (possession without a face-off) after a goal by either team. All 7 defensive players must align inside their defensive box area before the ready to play whistle is blown.

2. The team that is behind shall have the option of waiving this rule at any point in the contest. Additionally, a team that is ahead by 4 or more goals will be required (in all settled & slow break offense situations) to move the ball through X before a shot is attempted.

Checking: All legal stick & body checks are permitted, excluding one handed stick checks. All stick checks must be executed with proper intent of contact with the ball carriers stick and or gloves. There will be no “take-out” checks, or any hit with or without possession that has the intent of injuring.  A "take-out" check occurs when a player runs at another player from a distance greater than 5 yards and knocks him to the ground.

Penalties: No man up / man down. Personal fouls will result in a “Fast Break” to the team that is fouled. Technical fouls will result in change of possession. Push with possession will result in a fast break for the offended team. All crease violations with possession will result in a “free-clear” for the offended team.  Fast-Breaks: One midfielder from the offended team will be awarded the ball 6 yards from the face off X in the direction of their goal. All other midfielder's will align behind the midfield line, then all players will be released on the officials whistle.

Advancement: There is no time requirement to advance the ball out of the defensive zone or into the offensive zone. There is no requirement to keep the ball in the offensive restraining area in the last two minutes of play be either team.

Equipment: Stick Length: Stick length shall be a minimum of 37 (40 for high school) a maximum of 42 inches (short cross) or 52 to 72 inches (long cross). The 5/6th grade division will play with long poles that are supplied by the league, (No long-sticks permitted in the 3/4th grade division) . Goaltenders shall wear throat guards, chest protector, gloves, and protective cup. Goal tenders do not wear arm guards or shoulder pads. All Field Players must wear a lacrosse helmet (no hockey helmets), lacrosse shoulder pads, lacrosse arm guards, lacrosse gloves and a protective cup. Mouth guards must be properly worn by all players at all times.
